This semester has been extremely interesting and thoroughly entertaining. We’ve studied through the changes to the ASB surrounding brand’s Facebook pages, Target’s infamous children’s clothing glitch, and most recently the Alan Jones saga. What has been made very clear is the way communication itself is evolving through social media.

According to the Wikipedia Communication (from Latin “communis“, meaning to share) is the activity of conveying information through the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, visuals, signals, writing, or behavior.

To finish up such a fast moving, technology focused unit I suggest you takes some time out (as I have done) and watch this clip on A Brief History of Communication

Some times I feel we need to take a step back and look at how we got to where we are today. Social Media would not be what it is today if humans didn’t create smoke signals and paintings on cave walls, ultimately we are still doing the same thing today as what was done all those years ago…connecting! It is human instinct to reach out to others in some way, shape or form, these days it just looks and functions a little differently.

Are you excited?

After a bad case of fatigue I’m feeling rejuvenated and inspired by social media once again. How did you bounce back so quickly I hear you ask… someone asked me why I like social media. SO why do I like social media, what excites me about social media?

  • Social Media is forever changing, evolving and expanding.
  • People use social media for different reasons. Some for networking, some for ego, some for fun, some to learn, some to argue or converse on an informed topic.
  • Each channel has its own function and you need to think about the message you use on each
  • Social Media is measurable
  • Social Media gives us the opportunity to have conversations with consumers, and they now expect that
  • Social Media changes people, and people change Social Media.
  • Social Media is your friend, if you understand it listen to it and change with it you will stay friends.

These are the top 15 stats that excite me about Social Media sourced from Tom Pick’s 87 More Vital Social Media Marketing Facts and Stats for 2012;

  1. 30% of the world’s entire population is now online, and social networking is the most popular and time consuming online activity—with users spending more than one fifth (22%) of their time engaging on social media channels. What excites you about Social Media Marketing?





Still feeling fatigued?

As a follow on from my blog post on social media fatigue (and just my general fatigue after a busy few weeks) I started thinking more and more about how often Social Media can become a chore.

Alyssa Gregory identified 3 common causes of social media fatigue and remedy’s for these. As an extension I’m going to throw a few more into the ring. The three existing causes are:

  1.        New Platforms
  2.        Burnout
  3.        Lack of Success

To these I am going to add:

Expectation

The expectation that what you need to contribute is well thought out and valuable so as not to annoy disrupt or disturb your followers in any way. Also the pressure of contributing something “new”, and providing a level of entertainment often weighs heavily on the mind. This can lead to over-thinking of content and a lack of fluidity and spontaneity.

Time

Time or lack thereof can make Social media feel like a chore. If you are pushed for time in the day the last thing you want to be doing is thinking about social media.

Social Media Fatigue

The last four weeks have been a little manic, working way too much, training hard on the Michelle Bridges 12WBT, studying Social Media Marketing at Monash, Board of director responsibilities and that is all before I get home at night. It’s fair to say, I AM TIRED! So what did I do when writing this post, type Tired of Social Media into Google (the best place for inspiration, much better than looking outside my lounge window to the small paved enclosed courtyard) and was surprised how many people are tired of social media, social media experts etc. often referred to as Social Media Fatigue.

According to Techopedia Social media fatigue refers to social media users’ tendency to pull back from social media when they become overwhelmed with too many social media sites, too many friends and followers and too much time spent online maintaining these connections.

According to Word Spy it is a noun: Mental exhaustion and stress caused by creating and maintaining an excessive number of accounts on social networking sites.

An article written by John Bell questions whether we even have enough time in our day to be consuming more and more social media, but suggest that our time is shifting between the devices and mediums that pop up over time and this will continue to evolve.

Social Media can be tiring. You are switched on 24hours a day 7 days a week and there is no down time as with traditional marketing or advertising mediums are we exhausting our consumers by pushing too much content onto them? I myself as a consumer am tired, so how do we make the content valuable and worthwhile for our consumers in the limited time we have to capture their attention?
